چکیده

Listening tests were conducted in order to find out the audibility of inharmonicity in musical sounds produced by string instruments, such as the piano or the guitar. The threshold of the audibility of inharmonicity was measured as a function of the inharmonicity coefficient at five fundamental frequencies. It was found that the detection of inharmonicity is strongly dependent on the fundamental frequency. A simple model is presented for estimating the threshold as a function of the fundamental frequency. The need to implement inharmonicity in digital sound synthesis is discussed.

The effect of inharmonicity on pitch in string instrument sounds

The effect of inharmonicity on pitch was measured by listening tests at four fundamental frequencies. Inharmonicity was defined in a way typical of string instruments, such as the piano, where all partials are elevated in a systematic way. It was found that the pitch judgment is usually dominated by some other partials than the fundamental; however, with a high degree of inharmonicity, the fund...

Importance of inharmonicity in the acoustic Guitar

Audibility of inharmonicity in realistic acoustic guitar tones was studied through formal listening experiments. Test tones were synthesized using an FZ-ARMA model of acoustic guitar sounds, which allows accurate control of the inharmonic partials. Inharmonicity was detected fairly easily for the lowest strings if the plucking transient was left out of the sound, but much harder for the full so...

Audibility of Initial Pitch Glides in String Instrument Sounds

Listening experiments were made to measure the detection thresholds for initial pitch glides in string instrument sounds, where a rapid decline of pitch is caused by tension modulation during the attack. Realistic sounding synthetic tones were generated by additive synthesis. The frequency decay of the glide was defined through the overall decay rate of amplitude, simulating the behavior of rea...

Inharmonicity of Sounds from Electric Guitars: Physical Flaw or Musical Asset?

Because of bending waves, strings of electric guitars produce (slightly) inharmonic spectra. One aim of the study was to find out also in view of synthesized musical instruments whether sounds of electric guitars should preferably produce strictly harmonic or slightly inharmonic spectra. Inharmonicities of typical sounds from electric guitars were analyzed and studied in psychoacoustic experime...
